#35: Golems
I. Dear Reader,
This weekend is Easter for me so if you celebrate it, happy Easter to you. If you don’t, well, happy weekend - that’s good enough reason to cheer. If you’ve got something else more specific to be happy about, that’s even better! It’s been an incredibly busy week for me and I’m essentially working through the weekend too so the newsletter is what gets abbreviated.
A quick shout to SIN, a sourcebook for Spire that I contributed some writing to, and Anamnesis, a solo journaling tarot game by Sam Leigh that I’ll be doing layout for.
Back to more hefty programming next week.
Yours quickly,
Thomas
II. Listen of the Week
Not about RPGs specifically but I really enjoyed this beautiful and bittersweet video about the origin of golems.
As is now customary, my solidly game-related recommendation is +1 Forward’s latest episode for tips and tricks on running a new PbtA game for a group.
III. Links of the Week
UFO Press, creators of Legacy 2e among many other games, is merging with Rowan Rook & Decard, creators of Spire and Heart.
National Geographic talk about how role-playing games might be good for kids and their mental health.
On Polygon, an article about City of Winter, the follow-up game to Fall of Magic. I love how the article was written by someone who’s clearly a fan: “I play a lot of indie RPGs, but Fall of Magic has become my obsession. I love the game like I’ve never loved a TTRPG before. My gaming crew has been playing one continuous campaign for nearly three years.”
A thorough review of Star Trek Adventures: “The core mechanics? Pretty straightforward! All these other bits? A fair degree more fiddly, and they might not show up every session.”
In their latest video, RPG Internationale takes a look at Small Town Skeletons, a storytelling game of teenagers turning into skeletons - and all the feelings about changing bodies that come up with that. These video reviews always feel personal and sensitive - really enjoying them.
