#89: Mini-letter!
I. Dear Reader,
Busy weekend for me! So just want to wish you all a good week ahead. Here’s some fun links to interesting things about RPGs!
Regretfully,
Thomas
II. Media of the Week
An actual play/introduction of Decaying Orbit, a storygame about an AI-controlled ship plummeting into a star. It’s a part of Storybrewers ( of Good Society fame) line of beautiful ‘Little Box’ games.
Award-winning game designer Jeeyon Shim was on Slate’s Working podcast to talk about keepsake games and her other work.
III. Links of the Week
There’s a mystery writing competition for Brindlewood Bay.
Since I mentioned it last week, I want to mention that the publishers of the Dark Souls RPG have taken the admirable and incredibly expensive decision to reprint and replace their books after complaints of errors.
On the Liber Ludorum blog, Walton Wood responds to a paper about how “RPGs are art” by arguing that actually “art is a kind of RPG”.
Rae Nedjadi of Sword Queen Games writes about emulation versus expansion, saying that there’s “a lot of potential in TTRPGs exploring beyond the inspiring material. Offering a creative space that can’t be present in the original media at all, and can only be effectively played out in a TTRPG.”
On the Gauntlet forum, a nice thread on games with beautiful and surprising picklists. It also links to this very insightful post by Stonetop designer Jeremy Strandberg about negative picklists (choosing an option that doesn’t happen).
IV. Small Ads
All links in the newsletter are completely based on my own interest. But to help support my work, this section contains sponsored links and advertisements. If you’d like your products to appear here, read the submission form.
